Rising fuel prices have brought the issue of
energy efficiency sharply to the attention of financial managers
throughout the UK business community. Last month’s announcement
from British Gas that “the era of cheap fuel is over” and
the news that Britain is soon to become a net importer of
natural gas means that this is no longer an issue that
can be ignored.
End users are now studying their energy consumption
patterns much more closely and looking for professional help
to make significant running cost savings. Most now recognise
that their building is a key part of their corporate image
as well as being a big potential drain on profits.
Commtech, a company with an established reputation
for commissioning systems to maximise their in use performance,
is being called upon to carry out detailed energy audits of
buildings to see where mechanical and electrical systems can
be adjusted or replaced to reduce energy waste and improve
the comfort of occupants.
The company has invested thousands of pounds
in the latest thermal imaging equipment to speed up and improve
their ability to carry out these vital checks. Modern thermal
imaging cameras can detect telltale ‘hotspots’
in concealed pipework and electrical cables to pinpoint areas
that need attention without having to physically dismantle
wall and ceiling panels.
The results have been startling and the Commtech
team has uncovered a series of horror stories of unseen waste.
They have detected poorly designed and inadequately commissioned
systems that may have been clunking away undisturbed for years
barely doing their jobs and wasting their owners’ money.
Thermal imaging techniques have exposed blocked pipework;
only partially performing chilled ceilings; overloaded pumps
and a multitude of other problems.
Once you have accepted you have a problem and
we have identified the source, you are well on your way to
improving the behaviour of your building.
